Thomas Gerwin

Biography

*8 Feb 1955 Kassel

Thomas Gerwin studied guitar and flute from 1975 to 1978 in Kassel. On completing his studies he then went on to study musicology, linguistics / philosophy and art history in Berlin and Tübingen (MA). From 1987 to 1990, he completed his postgraduate studies with an art major in composition, with an emphasis on electronics, unter the tutelage of Ulrich Süsse in Stuttgart.

From 1990 to 1998 he worked at the ZKM in Karlsruhe (Center for Art and Media technology Karlsruhe) and was active with the establishment and management of the music library and the International Digital Electroacoustic Music Archive (IDEAMA). He also worked as a visiting artist and sound curator at the ZKM.

From 1993 to 1997 he was deputy chairman of the "German Society for Electroacoustic Music" (DeGeM) and head of the DeGeM archive and from 1996 to 2000 was vice-president of the "Forum für Klanglandschaften” (Forum for aural landscapes).

Since 2001 he has held the position of chairman for the "Society for multisensorial Art " www.thomasgerwin.de / IfmK.html IfMK, Since 2002 he has been the artistic director for the "Berliner Lautsprecher Orchesters", and since 2004 he has been busy as the founder and director of the ‘Internationalen Klangkunstfestes Berlin’ (International sound-art festival in Berlin). More recently he has been the Speaker for ‘AG Tiefklang der Berliner Unterwelten’ society. (2010)

Thomas Gerwin is a classically trained composer and sound artist, who was fairly early getting into electro-acoustic music. Later, he also dealt extensively with the development of "soundscape composition".

He means of expression regards his work is to continually incorporate new media, such as theater, dance, film and sculpture. As a Freelancer he composes for radio and concert in his own studio in Berlin-Tiergarten, creates sound sculptures and space-sound installations, whilst also working with various ensembles using live electronics and percussion.

His works have appeared on numerous audio CDs and CD-ROMs that are available worldwide.

Gerwin lives and works in Berlin.

Awards and Scholarships

2007 Radio Play Award by the Akademie der Künste (Academy of the Arts) for the composition for "Ponderabilien" (SWR) by Stephan Krass

2007 Radio play of the year 2007 (SWR) with "Raoul Tranchirers Bemerkungen über die Stille" (Raoul Tranchirers remarks about Silence) by Ror Wolf (commended for directing and music)

2008 Artist in Residence at Electro Visiones and Habitación del Ruido in Mexico City 2008 Sound Art scholarship from the Berlin Senate / Cultural Affairs for the interactive sound-image installation "Sophiensaele Soundings"

2010 chosen to make the official CD for the International Computer Music Conference ICMC 2010 in New York City with his composition "corrente ... b".
