Günter Kahowez completed his high school teacher training in Linz. From 1957 to 1960 he studied music theory at the Bruckner Conservatory under Helmut Eder, and later studied composition at the Vienna Academy of Music with Karl Schiske. He performed several times at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music between  1961 and 1969.

From 1969 to 1993 he worked as a music graphic artist and music proof reader at Universal Edition. From 1988 to 1994 he was assistant professor at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna and from 1994 until his retirement, he taught as a professor, specialising in the field of Musical form analysis.
