*1957 Sesto S. Giovani
was born in Milan in 1957, studied at first saxophone with Orlando Jannelli, composition with Umberto Rotondi, subsequently with Adriano Guarnieri and Giacomo Manzoni at the Conservatory "Giuseppe Verdi" in Milan. Graduated in History of Music at the Milan University with Francesco Degrada, with a thesis about the influence of Afro-American music on European music in the first part of the 20th century. Further influences were courses and seminars with Brian Ferneyhough and György Ligeti as well as workshops at IRCAM in Paris and the Experimental Studio of the Heinrich Strobel Foundation of SWR in Freiburg. His interests as a saxophonist include both composed and improvised music, with performances also in live electronics. For several years he taught at the Conservatory of Vicenza, where he was among the promoters of GRAIM (Group of Applied Research in Computer and Music). His wide-spread oeuvre includes also music for stage and cinema; his compositions have been performed worldwide, and received numerous prizes and honorary mentions in national and international competitions. Since 1998, he has been professor of composition at the Conservatory of Music in Novara. Lives near Milan, Italy.
