Carlos Mastropietro

Biography

*3 Mar 1958 Buenos Aires

Carlos Mastropietro studied Composition at the Facultad de Artes at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP) as a student of Mariano Etkin, Gerardo Gandini, and Manuel Juarez. He then attended courses by such people as Isabel Aretz, Dieter Schnebel and Nicolaus A. Huber. He completed his compositional training in Coriún Aharonian.

Since 1993, Mastropietro has taught composition and orchestration at the UNLP, 1996/97, and also at the Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Música Contemporánea (CEAMC) in Buenos Aires 1998/99,  and later at the Universidad de la República in Montevideo. As a member of the research team for musical analysis, led by Mariano Etkin, Mastropietro has contributed to essays on the works of Charles Ives, John Cage and Gerardo Gandini. He is the author of several studies on the issues of instrumentation, composition and tone quality.

He has been acknowledged with awards from the University of La Plata in 1988, by the Fondo Nacional de las Artes in 1989, and by the Asociación Editar in 1995. In 1998 for the guitar solo "Violin hechizo" he received an award from the Intendencia Municipal de Montevideo, Uruguay. He also received a nomination at the ISCM World Music Days in Romania in 1999.

Carlos Mastropietro lives in La Plata.
