Stephen Montague studied piano, conducting and composition at Florida State University, received a doctorate from Ohio State University in 1972, and won a Fulbright Scholarship to Poland where he worked in the Experimental Music Studio of Polish Radio, Warsaw, 1972-74. In 1974 he came to England first as a composer with the Strider Dance Company, then settled in London permanently as a freelance composer and pianist.
Stephen Montague's music can be described as a fusion of minimalism and romanticism; a further influence has been his advanced work in Computers and electronics.
His compositions have been performed and broadcast world-wide, featuring in numerous international festivals. As a virtuoso pianist he has recorded for all major European networks, and performed at numerous places and festivals.
During 1992 and 1995 he was a Guest Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Auckland
He was Composer in Residence at Trinity College of Music in 2003 and joined the composition staff in the autumn of 2004.
