After working as a stage painter at the City Theater of Zwickau, Knut Müller studied painting and graphics at the School of Visual Arts in Leipzig from 1984 to 1989, under the guidance of Prof. Dietrich Burger amongst others. Afterwards he did a post-graduate course under Professor Arno Rink in Painting / Graphics where he achieved a ‘master’s student’ diploma.

From 1992 to 1996, he took private composition lessons with Steffen Schleiermacher in Leipzig and from 1996 to 1999, he completed his postgraduate studies in "Electronic Music" at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden with Prof. Wilfried Jentzsch.

Muller won prizes at the Composition Competition "Ernest Bloch" in Lugano in 1994 and at the International Composition Competition in Klagenfurt in 1996. He has received various grants e.g. from the Stiftung Kulturfonds Berlin (Cultural Foundation Berlin), the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, the GNM-Nachwuchsforums Frankfurt, the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, from the State of Saxony and also from the VCCA Mt San Angelo / USA.

His compositions are performed throughout Europe, including concerts and festivals in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Munich, Hanover, Frankfurt and Leipzig. Various ensembles have interpreted his works, including. Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Avantgarde, Ensemble Köln, Kairos Quartet, Pellegrini Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Ensemble 01 and soloists such as Carine Levine and Steffen Schleiermacher.
