Reinhold Urmetzer

Biography

*1950 Saarbrücken

Reinhold Urmetzer studied music, philosophy and German language and literature in Saarbrücken, Stuttgart and Tübingen. He studied composition under Erhard Karkoschka and philosophy under Karl Otto Apel. Further important influences came from conversations and meetings with Karel Goeyvaerts (minimal music), Francois Lyotard ("What is postmodernism?"), Niklas Luhmann ("Der Beobachter beobachtet den Beobachter" [The observer watches the observer]) and from Robert Jungk's "Future Workshop".

Reinhold Urmetzer worked for ten years at the ‘Stuttgarter Zeitung’ newspaper as a critic for rock music as well as New Music. During the difficult years of change at the taz newspaper in Berlin, he contributed to, and helped determine the look of the culture section with his experimental interviews. In journals such as Das Orchester and Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, he specifically wrote about opera, classical and contemporary music in general. In 1997 in Bonn he was awarded the Cicero-Redner prize for his "distinguished contribution to the culture of speech".

His compositions are diverse, they include rock music as well as electronic music, music graphics, as well as conventionally notated music.

Reinhold Urmetzer lives in Stuttgart.
